No fewer than 1,531 junior and junior players from 15 municipalities in El Salvador, representing 62 schools and 104 teams, took part in the II National Handball Games organized by the Salvadoran Handball Federation.
The event, which saw an increase in the number of participants compared to its previous edition, kicked off in early August with the qualifying matches held in different regions of the Central American country. As a result, the top teams from four categories – men and women U-15 and U-19 – qualified for the finals.
A total of 16 teams competed at this stage – four in each category – and the winners were determined after round robin tournaments, which ended on August 31. No school or region really dominated, as CE Canton El Obrajuelo won the women’s U-15 event, CE Capulin triumphed in the men’s tournament of the same age category, CE Asentamiento became winners of the women’s competition U-19 and the Santa Ana National Institute was crowned champions of the U-19 Men’s Tournament.
“It is very important to highlight the work carried out by the Salvadoran Handball Federation and other organizations such as the Ministry of Sports of El Salvador, the National Olympic Committee, the Ministry of Education and the direct support received from the ‘IHF through their Handball at School Project and the four-year plan that has allowed the training of many teachers and coaches from several places in our country, and access to equipment,” said Cecilia Fernandez, President of the Salvadoran Handball Federation (FESBAL).
“It was a great experience to see tons of children and teenagers playing handball in the final phase, the result of the work of promoting and developing handball during this year”, added Flor Reyes, coordinator of the development of FESBAL.
