The National Games will take place as planned, according to the Minister of Sports

Youth and Sports Minister Maheshwar Gahatraj assured on Friday that the ninth National Games, which have been postponed from October 14 to 20, will be held as scheduled.

The Games have already been postponed twice for different reasons. The country’s sporting mega-event was originally scheduled to take place in March 2021, but was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The National Sports Council announced in April that it would stage the multi-sport event in the first week of June, but plans were postponed again to October citing insufficient preparations.

“We will complete the selection process as soon as possible and organize the Games on the scheduled dates,” the minister said at the first meeting of the main Games organizing committee.

Gandaki Province is hosting the event this year.

“The necessary physical infrastructure is being built in Pokhara. Although the sports infrastructure seems to be insufficient for some events, we are doing homework to solve the problems,” added Gahatraj.

NSC Member Secretary, Tanka Lal Ghising, underlined on this occasion the need for unity and coordination among all stakeholders to bring the Games to a successful conclusion.

The meeting, chaired by the Minister of Sports, also approved various decisions, including the formation of an Executive Committee under the leadership of the Member Secretary and 14 sub-committees to manage the Games; involving 11 teams including seven provinces, three departmental teams and the RRN; with 36 games (in addition to shot put and canyoning as exhibition games); and organization of a trophy tour in the seven provinces (including departmental clubs).

According to the NSC, a budget of Rs 600 million has been approved for the Games.

Besides exhibition games, athletics, badminton, table tennis, cricket, soccer, tennis, hockey, boxing, volleyball, kabaddi, weightlifting, shooting, gymnastics, swimming, handball, judo, wrestling, soft tennis, squash, taekwondo, wushu, basketball, bodybuilding, chess, kho kho, karate, full contact karate, taekwondo ITF, sepak takraw, golf, archery, cycling, fencing, triathlon, paragliding and rugby were included. All events will have male and female categories.
